Old Dominion rallies in regulation, defeats Panthers in OT

After a 13˗day layoff, Georgia State men’s basketball suffered a tough loss on the road to the Old Dominion Monarchs by a final of 58˗54 in Norfolk, Va. The Panthers had an eight˗point lead late in the second half before the Monarchs closed the regulation period out with eight consecutive points en route to an overtime victory.


First Half

Georgia State’s second possession earned them the first points of the game with a midrange jump shot from Markus Crider. Old Dominion’s Johnathan Arledge answered on the next Monarchs possession with a jumper of his own to tie the game.

A 5˗0 run would be engineered by the Panthers with all five points coming courtesy of T.J. Shipes. Aaron Bacote nailed a three˗pointer to make the score 7˗5 before a layup from Ryan Harrow off the glass extended the early Georgia State lead to 9˗5.

With the score at 13˗9 in favor of the Panthers, a 7˗0 Georgia State run that included five R.J. Hunter points and a dunk by Crider extended their lead 20˗9. A three from Ambrose Mosley ended the run to make the score 20 ˗12.

A Harrow layup made the score 22 ˗12 before Old Dominion placed together a 7˗0 run of their own. Bacote placed a layup, then was fouled by Jalen Brown. He made one of two free throws, but then got his own rebound shortly afterwards.

Taylor Denzell was then fouled by Shipes as he made one of two free throws, which was followed by another Monarchs offensive rebound, this time from by Jordan Baker.

Three attempts by Bacote were no good, but three possessions later would give a three from Baker to make the score 22˗19.

Curtis Washington was  fouled as he converted a layup attempt into two points making his free throw.

Two Bacote made free throws after a foul by Jalen Brown made the score 25˗21. Keenan Palmore was then called for a foul on Harrow, which led Palmore to making both free throws for a 27˗21, but Old Dominion scored on its last possession of the half with a layup by Trey Freeman to bring the score to 27˗23 as the game entered halftime.


Second Half

The second half began with Freeman, who was only one for seven shooting in the first half, nailing a three to bring Old Dominion within one at 27˗26.

With the score at 29˗28 in favor of Georgia State, it became 31˗30 with two˗pointers by the Panthers’ Hunter and the Monarchs’ Bacote. After a jumper by Harrow, a three by Freeman tied it  at 33 before Harrow placed the Panthers ahead by two at 35˗33.

Harrow fouled Bacote placing him  at the line, which led to Bacote making both free throws to tie the game again at 35. A jumper from Arledge placed the Monarchs ahead 37˗35.

Shipes then fouled Freeman placing him at the line. Freeman made only one of two free throws making the score 38˗35 in favor of Old Dominion.

With the score at 40˗37 in favor of the Monarchs, Crider and Old Dominion’s Denzell Taylor traded dunks to make the game 42˗39. Crider’s came off an assist by Hunter while Taylor’s came off of the Monarchs’ 14 offensive rebound of the game.

Five straight points from Harrow placed the Panthers ahead 44˗42 prompting a timeout from the Monarchs. Crider placed in a layup and free throw after being fouled for an 8˗0 run and a 47˗42 lead for Georgia State.

A Ware layup and a Harrow made free throw extended the run to 11˗0 and made the score 50˗42. Freeman hit a jumper to bring Old Dominion within six at 50˗44. Shipes then picked up his fourth foul as Bacote went to the line and made both of his free throws.

The Monarchs defense then pressured Harrow into a turnover which was followed up by a Freeman jumper to bring Old Dominion within two at 50˗48.

The Panthers committed a five second violation on an inbounds attempt which gave the ball back to the Monarchs, but they missed the ensuing three point attempt. Shipes was then fouled placing him at the line. He missed the foul shot attempt and the ensuing rebound attempt was ruled out of bounds off Georgia State, despite it appearing to be off the hand of Old Dominion’s Richard Ross.

Jordan Baker converted a layup off the glass to tie the game at 50. On the final possession of regulation, Washington was called for a foul on Old Dominion’s Denzel Taylor, who missed both free throws to send the game to overtime.



A Mosley putback shot off a Freeman miss equaled the first points of overtime to make the score 52˗50. Hunter then drove into the basket for a layup to tie it again at 52. Ware then passed to Crider near the basket who layed the ball in to give the Panthers the lead again at 54˗52. A layup by Freeman upped his point total to 19 to tie it again at 54.

With 54.2 seconds left, Freeman split two Georgia State defenders, then converted on a layup with Shipes guarding him. This made it 56˗54 with under four seconds to play. The next Panthers possession would see Hunter attempt a game winning three, but he missed.

The Monarchs then turned their last possession of the game into a breakaway dunk by Arledge. A few seconds later, Old Dominion prevailed 58˗54 over Georgia State.

The loss brings the Panthers record to 6˗3. Georgia State hopes to regroup from their tough defeat as they return to the Sports Arena on Sunday to face Southern Mississippi at 2 p.m.
