Miles talks with ESPN at Sun Belt Media Day

The Sun Belt Conference Football Media Day was broadcasted nationwide on ESPN3 and featured interviews with all the Sun Belt head coaches including Georgia State’s Trent Miles.

Miles was interviewed by host Cole Wright and Sun Belt Network analyst Cole Cubic on a number of topics including his past, the quarterback situation, and how he plans to make Georgia State a winning football team.

“We’re in a whole different level now. [Players have] got to learn how to compete [and] have a chance to learn how to win,” Miles said.

Miles repeatedly mentioned- as he has several times before- that recruiting is one of his main focuses on how to turn the Panthers in the right direction.

“We’ve got a great area to recruit. We’re in the heart of Georgia, and we can stay right at home and work our way through that state that’s got great high school football.”

“Its all about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, not the X’s and O’s,” Miles confidently professed.

Miles’s background with Indiana State came up about how he turned their football program from a loosing one to a winning one and how he will attempt do the same for Georgia State. Miles said it all stems back to fluent recruiting and finding guys that “have that chip on their shoulder that they want to prove to everybody that they can win.”

Miles explained that the quarterback situation is still “wide open” between Ben McLane, Clay Chastain, and Ronnie Bell and that it will continue to be until the season is closer.

“I don’t need Brett Farve,” Miles said. “I need a guy that can go out and manage the game, do what we ask him to do, be a leader. . . and go out there and get us some wins.”

A graphic appeared on the screen showing Georgia State’s 32,000 plus attendance at the University and that it is the second largest university in Georgia. This led the conversation towards the issue of the lack of student involvement and attendance at Georgia State home football games.

“We’ve got to get our students out. We’ve got to do a good job of getting out and interacting with the students. . . and giving them a product to come out to support and take pride in,” Miles said.

Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson spoke on ESPN3 about his conference and that it is “very fortunate to have the additions of Texas State and Georgia State.”

Miles was joined in New Orleans by one of his offensive linemen, Ulrick John, as his player representative at media day.
