Iowa State defeats Panthers on the road

In a nationally televised matchup on ESPNU from the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, Georgia State men’s basketball suffered defeat from the Iowa State Cyclones by a final of 81˗58.

The first half was close before Iowa State dominated the second half to pull away for the victory.

Iowa State began with a three point play and an offensive rebound that translated into two more points for the Cyclones.

Kevin Ware would provide the first two points of the night for the Panthers before Naz Long responded with a three for Iowa State to give them an 8˗2 lead.

Instrumental in the early struggles for the Panthers were committing several turnovers.

Georgia State trimmed its deficit to two at 12˗10 before Long’s second three pointer extended the Iowa State edge back to five at 15˗10. The Panthers would later cut their deficit to two with a made basket from Harrow and later to one with a three pointer from R.J. Hunter. Bryce Dejean˗Jones responded after the Hunter three with one of his own for a 20˗16 advantage.

The Panthers would then see Hunter’s second three˗pointer of the game and a slam dunk from Markus Crider to go ahead 21˗20. Georgia State would then take a slim 23˗22 lead before a 6˗0 from the Cyclones gave them the lead at 28˗23.

Four straight points from the Panthers would be followed by another Iowa State three˗pointer for a 31˗27 score. T.J. Shipes brought the Panthers to two at 31˗29, but was hit across the eye and unable to shoot a free throw. Jalen Brown was brought in as a substitute and missed.

The Cyclones then found Curtis Edozie near the basket for what would have been two points, but was fouled by Curtis Washington. He stood over Edozie and was hit with a technical foul.

Iowa State took a 33˗29 lead, then a layup from Monte Morris extended the Cyclones’ lead to 35˗29. On the ensuing inbound attempt, Hunter did not go out of bounds which gave Iowa State one more possession with less than one second left. The Cyclones’ three point attempt was no good as 35˗29 would be the halftime tally.

Halftime would begin with the Cyclones embarking on a 7˗0 run to extend their lead to 42˗29 before baskets from Hunter and Washington trimmed the deficit to nine at 42˗33.

With over 14 minutes to play, the Iowa State lead became 51˗40. The Cyclones’ lead would then balloon to 58˗42. Georgia State also began finding itself in foul trouble as the Iowa State advantage would be pushed to 20 at 62˗42.

Shipes and Crider found themselves with four fouls each as the Cyclones would see their lead grow to 68˗44.

Iowa State continued to maintain their large advantage with four minutes to play. The Cyclones’ would maintain their lead as it became 81˗58 Iowa State.

All five Cyclones starters would finish in double˗digit points as they would beat the Panthers 81˗58.
