Golden Globes 2015 Aimed High, Fell Short

I always get excited when award season rolls around, viewing all the beautiful gowns floating down the red carpet and the gorgeous celebrities smiling at the cameras. The Golden Globes, The Sag Awards, The Critics Choice Awards, and The Oscars, all occur throughout the months of January and February.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards were on Sunday and they were filled with stars such as, Benedict Cumberbatch, Oprah Winfrey, Amy Adams, and Reese Witherspoon. The main movies that were nominated were “Foxcatcher,” “Big Eyes,” “Into the Woods,” “Selma,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Boyhood,” and “Birdman.”

When it comes to “Best Actor in a Drama,” Eddie Redmayne was the winner and I was completely for that. I was excited to see a new comer win the title, especially when his performance in “The Theory of Everything” was phenomenal. His portrayal of Stephen Hawking was clearly thought out and respectfully equivalent to the genius’s life.

However, even though I am a huge fan of Julianne Moore, and even though her performance in “Still Alice” was nothing less than spectacular, I believed Rosamund Pike should have won the title for “Best Actress in a Drama. She was the perfect choice for the character Amy Dunn in the film adaptation of the novel “Gone Girl.” She knew exactly how to play that insane character beautifully, and how to get the crowd invested in the story.

I did agree with the winner for Best Motion Picture-Drama, “Boyhood” was a story that spanned 12 years long, they filmed the life of a young boy and his life growing up as a teenager, with a dysfunctional family and his own emotional battles. The fact that the director and actors were able to commit to such a fantastic storyline, and consistently give their all in the performances was amazing.

As for the show itself, I am usually a huge fan of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s jokes, however this year I felt that they didn’t bring their all.

Some of their jokes were duds, and the North Korean impersonation by Margaret Cho was a bit distasteful. They did have some good one liners, that were usually aimed toward George Clooney. The show started off on a high note, and had good highlights, such as “Hurt Locker’s” Jeremy Renner calling Jennifer Lopez’s breast as “golden globes.” Also, everyone there seemed to be having some sweating issues, which apparently was caused due to the air conditioning being shut off at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

All in all, I would give the award show a B, even though I have a special place in my heart for all award shows and will always love them no matter what. However, they fell short this year. I am hoping that the upcoming shows will change my current attitude, here’s hoping!
