Georgia State suffers system crash

Georgia State’s Information Systems and Technology Department reported the crash of certain university systems, including PantherMail, PAWs, GoSolar on June 8, according to the Department’s page.

The cause for the system crash was a hardware outage in Georgia State’s Data Center, according to Georgia State’s Chief Innovation Officer, Phil Ventimiglia.

Ventimiglia said Georgia State is continually evaluating and updating their resources to make the recovery process from a crash quicker and more efficient.

“After any event, such as today’s system interruption, we review what occurred and take action to address the root causes in order to avert similar issues moving forward,” Ventimiglia said.

Ventimiglia said Georgia State always make it a priority to restore service as quickly as possible after a system interruption.

“The length of a system interruption can be dependent on the cause. In many cases, we are able to restore service within a short time and always work to minimize the impact on all those using the system when possible,” Ventimiglia said.

Priyanka Parekh, a Biology student who is currently taking summer classes, said those who made the website should focus on fixing the website because that’s their priority.

“Well, it’s really frustrating because everything that you ever need is all on one website, and when everyone accesses it, it is so slow and then it crashes,” Parekh said.

As of 4:37 p.m., PantherMail, PantherCard, Listserv and other services were restored to it’s performance and availability. PAWS, GoSOLAR and Banner still had a major outage at that time, according to the Georgia State IS&T status page.
