Don’t break the bank

After just finishing a Thanksgiving meal, some might say they can already feel their wallets aching when thinking about the long list of Christmas gifts they have to buy this year.

There’s one for dad, mom and the siblings, of course. Then the gifts for a few close friends, the significant other, the boss and even a little something for the house pet. So how are we college students going to manage this list with our limited budget? It’s quite simple, and, not to mention, inexpensive; you can cater to everyone’s interests and still have money left over to buy a Christmas gift for yourself! So this year, we’re investing in baskets.

We all know mothers, aunts and grandmothers only dream of a relaxing night off, so buy a bottle of wine, assorted cheeses and a soothing bubble bath and creatively put them in a basket with a heartfelt note.

It’s either a bullseye or a miss for your siblings and friends. Find out what their interests are and buy a year’s worth of magazine subscriptions. “Cosmopolitan” is currently offering a 69 percent discount, making a year’s worth of magazines just $15. Most automobile magazines ranging from four-wheel drives to Vipers and Mustangs cost between $10 to $12 maximum.

Gifts for bosses can be tricky. They’re not necessarily your buddy, yet they’re someone you see often and the source of your income. The magazine subscriptions still apply, but if your boss enjoys decorating for the season, why not join in and buy a few holiday ornaments for as low as $5? Maybe they’re not much of a jolly person (which seems to be the case sometimes), but if he or she has a sweet tooth, buy all sorts of sweets, put it in a basket, and tie it with a bow. Voila! You can’t go wrong with goods.

Last, but not least, the family’s pride and joy—your pets. This year, let them indulge in gourmet biscuits and treats instead of the annual Christmas suit with the Santa Claus hat. The costume is fine, but most dogs might prefer the delicacies instead.

This year, it’s all about the baskets. Spend a little money, and give your family and friends, bosses and pets their favorites with the items you provide in their baskets. It’s almost like the improved version of stockings hung by the fireplace, except these don’t have to be trinkets or fit in a sock. Have a pleasant gift-shopping experience and Happy Holidays!
