Continuing streetcar construction closes off sidewalks and lanes

Construction for the Atlanta Streetcar advanced on Edgewood Avenue closing off another sidewalk on March 4.

The corner of Gilmer Street and Edgewood Avenue is currently under construction. There is also a closed off lane on Peachtree Center Avenue causing cars to merge into one open-lane next to the crosswalk.

Students looking to cross the street can do so by accessing the crosswalk that has been put up by the Atlanta Streetcar. This crosswalk goes over some of the already existing rails.

Some Georgia State students said that they do not feel that the detours have hindered their safety in comparison to walking to Atlanta regularly.

“If you pay attention to the cars and we see when they are stopped, I don’t think it is that bad,” Clever Tobar, biology major, said. “When it is going to be finished is the biggest concern. It’s really all about timing if they finish it quickly I don’t think that there will be a lot of problems.”

Lucas Owens, an art major, agrees that the crosswalks do not add any safety concerns to being a downtown pedestrian.

“I think the location of the campus itself hinders my safety,” he said.“Traffic is the biggest inconvenience with all the construction.”
