City Adjustment: Tips to expanding your living space

I do not understand why living spaces in the city and dorms are built to fit only the belongings of dolls.

Most people are not the size of small children. We cannot get away with wearing those hot pink shirts that read “FUN-SIZED” in big, bold letters. If we did, we would be like weird parents that copy everything their kids do because they think it’s cool.

In light of this, I have created a guide to living in rooms the size of shoe boxes. Here are three easy steps to create a lot of space in areas with no space.

1) Throw it under the bed:

Growing up, when I was told to clean my room, everything went under the bed. Keeping a basket or a small shoe rack under your bed allows you to hide away your shoes and make your room a little less cluttered.

2) Door hangers:

Whoever created those hooks you hang onto the back of a door is a genius. It is an incredible feeling to be able to toss coats, scarfs, bags, anything your heart desires onto those things! It is an easy way to make sure that things stay off your floor with having without having a coat rack which gives your room the feel of a dental office from the ’50s.

3) Shower rods:

Installing shower rods in your closet gives you more room to hang up clothes, and it saves you from those awkward fold lines that develop in drawers. So now, instead of having to pick and choose which clothes you want to take home for the fall and winter, you can just keep them all in your closet. Who knows, you might need that sheer tank top in December.

Finding areas that don’t provide space is hard. However, this is the life that most of us living on campus or in the city have chosen. We choose to enjoy the city and leave the sprawling space at home.
