Women’s soccer defeated in Quarterfinals of Sun Belt Championship

On Wednesday afternoon from Mobile, Ala., Georgia State soccer was eliminated from the Sun Belt Championship tournament.

The Panthers were the No. 6 seed in the tournament, and faced the No.3 team Texas State. The game was open for both sides, but a solitary goal in the 28th minute would decide the game.

The game began with both sides testing each other, with Texas State sending an effort wide in the fourth minute, and Panthers defender Lindsay Leonardo seeing a header saved from a corner.

Panthers goalkeeper Brie Haynes made her first save in the 12th minute, and forward Whitney Ravan had a shot saved in the 14th minute. A breakthrough came in the 28th minute, when Bobcats player Lynsey Curry headed the ball into the net to make the score 1-0 to Texas State.

The goal changed the mood of the game, with the Bobcats pressing hard to grab another, and the Panthers reeling. Haynes made a save to keep it 1-0 in the 31st minute, and another chance deflected off the left post for the Bobcats. The Panthers went into halftime 1-0 down and on the wrong side of shots taken (8-3).

The Panthers fought back in the second half, and created a couple of good chances. In the 82nd minute, defender Jenna Moore shot wide with what surely would have been the equalizer, and the game ended 1-0.

Georgia State completes its season with a record of 6-10-4.
