Weekly sports briefs Feb. 10

Track and Field
The performance of Georgia State’s track and field team was highlighted by LaPorscha Wells setting a new school record for the weight throw on Friday with a distance of 18.75 meters. The Panthers also finished 1-2 in the women’s seeded 3,000 meter run and the women’s seeded one mile run. Georgia State’s next events will be split-squad meets in Ohio and Alabama this upcoming weekend.

Men’s Basketball
The Panthers could not claim first place against Georgia Southern as the Panthers lost by a final of 58-54 to the Eagles. Georgia State managed to bounce back from its defeat to its in-state rival with a 65-54 victory at South Alabama. Three Panthers finished in double-digit points including R.J. Hunter who had 19.

Women’s Basketball
Georgia State’s fortunes were much better against the school down south on the women’s side as the Panthers routed the Eagles by a final of 82-54 in Statesboro, Georgia. The Panthers followed that up with an 84-78 victory over South Alabama. Makeba Ponder had 19 points while Kennesha Nichols finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
