Convicted APS teacher faces delayed sentencing after giving birth

Shani Robinson, a former Atlanta Public School educator, was convicted of racketeering in a cheating scandal involving 10 other teachers on Saturday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This happened two days before the other 10 convicted teachers will be sentenced. Her co-defendants have been in jail since the verdict was initially announced, while Robinson was allowed to stay at home because of approaching delivery. She will not receive sentencing until August, according to the AJC.

Hillary Clinton confirms candidacy for 2016 presidential election

Hillary Clinton announced Sunday that she would be running for president in the 2016 election. She will begin her campaign with several events in Iowa and New Hampshire where her campaign platform will be introduced, according to the New York Times. Her theme will focus on “improving the economic fortunes of the middle class, with an emphasis on increasing wages and reducing income inequality,” the NY Times website states. Clinton ran for presidency back in 2008, but lost the Democratic nomination to now President Barack Obama, according to the Washington Post. If elected, she would be the first woman and former White House first lady to serve as United States president, according to the NY Times. A CBS News poll conducted in February indicated 81 percent of Democrats would consider casting their ballots in her favor.

Brazilians protest for impeachment of president

On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets in protest of their President Dilma Rousseff, whose second term has been characterized by some citizens as having corrupt government practices and a declining economy in Brazil, according to CNN. Al Jazeera reporter Alan Fisher said a recent study shows 63 percent of Brazilians are in favor of the president’s impeachment. Sunday’s protest was the second in a month’s time, with numbers slightly decreased from the first demonstration, according to Al Jazeera.
