Torch of Peace Award winner announced

Georgia State University’s Office of Student Life and Leadership/Intercultural Relations and the Alumni Association has awarded the 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Torch of Peace Award to Honors College student Jamie Redding.

“I would say that it feels amazing just because I am a hard worker and I am very involved on campus. There has never been a time where I was lazy, it feels great that my hard work has paid off, it is an honor. I know a lot of other leaders that I look up to but that look up to me,” Redding said.

Redding will graduate in May 2013 with Bachelors in Social Work and will continue on to earn her Masters as she hopes to pursue her career as a life coach for youth. She serves as a tour guide for the welcome center and does regular community service work with children who have lost a parent or a sibling through a program called Kate’s Club. She is also the undergrad student representative for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and interns at the DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS).

For the past 10 years, Georgia State University has awarded the Torch of Peace Award to the student that has demonstrated an exceptional ability to encourage positive intercultural relations at GSU and in the community. This student also excels in facilitating an environment that continues to uphold the dream of Dr. King.

In order to continue these efforts Redding would advice her fellow Georgia State colleagues to get involved in different community and leadership activities and overall just get to know people. “I’m really big on networking; it’s not about what you know it’s about who you know.” Said Redding

Redding will receive her award at the annual Martin Luther King Convocation on January 24, 2013 at 12:30 p.m.
