Students weigh in on possible Turner Field acquisition

After the announcement that Turner Field would no longer be the home to the Atlanta Braves, students at Georgia State have discussed various possibilities of what the 55-acre piece of land could become.

President Mark Becker said that with the expanding student body, he sees potential for the property to be turned into a football stadium or additional housing, according to an interview with 11 Alive.

Since Becker’s arrival in 2009, the university’s student population has grown to over 32,000 students.

However, he has made no final decisions on what he will do with the property. He also said in the interview that he has been approached by developers but it is too soon for him to make any decisions.

Sophomore business major Erin Cronin said that she believes more student housing would be a great idea because it is a need of the university.

“I know people are struggling to get housing, and if they found a way to make it cheaper that would get more students to want to stay there,” Cronin said.

Beverly Egolum, a junior commuter student, said that she thinks the field should be kept as a parking lot for students.

“I think it should be kept as parking, personally,” she said. “There are still many commuter students and the number will just continue to grow.”

Will Salako, a junior at Georgia State, said that using the Braves’ stadium as a football stadium for the Georgia State Panthers would be a great idea.

“Since Atlanta is already used to a high profile team like the Braves, putting Georgia State’s football team there will bring in more students and spectators,” he said.
