Sand volleyball falls at AVCA

Georgia State sand volleyball’s season came to a close this weekend at Gulf Shores, Alabama with losses to the Pepperdine Waves and Stetson Hatters on the first day of the tournament Friday.

The Panthers lost to the Waves in their opening-round matchup of the tournament. With the loss, Georgia State would face Stetson in a consolation-round matchup before losing to the Hatters, eliminating them from the tournament.

Georgia State’s top pair of Sara Olivova and Jansen Button were named as AVCA All-Americans for the tournament.

The team’s season ends with an all-time best record of 18-3.

Friday: 5-0 loss to Pepperdine

Lara Dykstra and Becca Strehlow (Pepperdine) defeated Milani Pickering and Majda Dostalova (Georgia State), 21-14, 21-14

Emily Cook and Delaney Knudsen (Pepperdine) defeated Kate Rawls and Nina Interwies (Georgia State), 21-18, 21-14

Sophie Asprey and Katie Messing (Pepperdine) defeated Jessica Fourspring and Alexis Townsend (Georgia State), 19-21, 21-13, 15-13

Samantha Cash and Corinne Quiggle (Pepperdine) defeated Delaney Rohan and Natalie Wilson (Georgia State), 24-22, 21-15

Majda Dostalova and Milani Pickering (Georgia State) defeated Maren Rygh and Kristin Lind (Stetson), 21-16, 21-19

Nina Interwies and Kate Rawls (Georgia State) defeated Savannah Byl and Holly Reschke (Stetson), 21-16, 21-12

Madison Akins and Kaylee Anderson (Stetson) defeated Jessica Fourspring (Georgia State), 13-21, 23-21, 15-6

Claudia Kalin and Madison Tormey (Stetson) defeated Natalie Wilson and Delaney Rohan (Georgia State), 21-19, 10-21, 15-9

Pairs tournament

Olivova and Button also advanced into the pairs tournament. The Panthers’ duo earned an opening round victory over Florida State’s Taylor Nyquist and Melanie Pavels, 21-14, 18-21, 15-13. Olivova and Button’s second-round match against Loyola Marymount’s Betsi Metter and Sarah Sponcil went three sets, but resulted in a 21-11, 23-25, 15-7 loss to Metter and Sponcil.
