SGA Executive Board-elect comes out in support of President-elect

The Student Government Association Executive Board-elect, released a statement regarding the disqualification of former SGA presidential candidate Christian Hill.

Ashley Epperson, Hill’s running mate, has now taken over the position of president-elect.

The Executive Board-elect said that it fully supported Epperson in her new position.

“[Epperson] ran with the understanding that in the absence of the President, she would assume responsibility as outlined in the SGA Constitution,” the statement said.

The statement also said Epperson and the rest of the E-board was already arranging an initial meeting to prepare for the next school year.

Here is the Executive Board-elect’s full statement:

On behalf of the Student Government Association Executive Board-Elect, we would like to collectively thank the student body for voting for us to serve as your Executive Board representatives. We appreciate your participation in the election process. Although it is over, do not let your passion for activism dwindle as we prepare for the coming academic year.

We made a promise to you all to be more transparent. Given the recent disqualification of Mr. Christian Hill, the Executive Board-elect must continue to serve the student body. Although it was unfortunate, we feel that Senator Ashley Epperson, who ran for the position of Executive Vice President, is more than qualified to fulfill the duties as the Student Government Association President of the 2013-2014 school year. She ran with the understanding that in the absence of the President, she would assume responsibility as outlined in the SGA Constitution. The constitution explicitly states in Article II, Section IV, Letter A that the Executive Vice President will:

“[assume] the duties of the President in his or her extended absence, incapacitation, resignation, or removal from office.”

As your newly elected Executive Board, we must work with President-Elect Epperson on a daily basis. Once again, we stand firmly behind President-Elect Epperson, and we are already arranging an initial meeting to prepare for the coming school year. As this school year concludes, we ask that you respect the privacy of Mr. Christian Hill, and that you continue to support the Student Government Association as we transition into our newly-elected positions and strive to accomplish the ideals we represent.

  1. The bylaws state: “[assume] the duties of the President in his or her extended absence, incapacitation, resignation, or removal from office.” Christian Hill has not resigned. He has not been removed from office. He is not incapacitated.

Christian Hill was disqualified. In my opinion, the SGA bylaws don’t apply to this situation.
