New Beginnings with Sand Volleyball

Sand Volleyball is a new addition to the Georgia State family of athletics, playing their first season this spring. Being a new team lends itself to some ups and downs, and the team finished with a more than respectable record of 8-9 in team play. They were 2-1 at home, 6-7 on neutral sand, and 0-1 away.

Sand Volleyballs biggest success came from dual team Lane Carico, a graduate student who was named to the AVCA All-America team, and junior Ohio native Kate Madewell. The pair made it to the Final Four AVCA national championship, finishing with a 33-8 record overall.

Carico and Madewell started off the championship poorly, losing their opening matches on May 5th, before going on a run into the semifinals. The pair were then beaten by the tournament’s #1 seed, USC.

Carico is leaving the sand volleyball team, having exhausted her eligibility. Madewell is returning, and will be one of two seniors on the team along with Molly Smestad, a Texas native who transferred into Georgia State after two years at Arkansas-Monticello.

Sand Volleyball will begin its second regular season Spring 2014.
