Hunter’s huge homecoming leads Panthers over IUPUI

On Saturday afternoon from Indianapolis, Georgia State men’s basketball ended their long road trip with a hard˗fought 66˗63 victory over the IUPUI Jaguars. The win increases the Panthers’ record to 5˗2 in the season.

One minute in, Markus Crider committed a foul against the Jaguars’ Marcellus Barksdale who followed with hitting both of his free throws for IUPUI. Aaron Brennan would then be charged with a foul against the Panthers’ Curtis Washington, who made one of his two free throws.

Later, Josh James would be fouled by Kevin Ware. James would make both of his free throws. The first field goal of the game would come when Washington made a layup off a three˗point miss from R.J. Hunter.

A 6˗0 run by IUPUI would extend their advantage to five at 10˗3 before Georgia State was led by six consecutive points from Ryan Harrow to tie the score at 11 apiece.

Two made Hunter free throws was followed by a two from Jalen McCallum to tie it again at 13. Six of the next eight points would be Panthers baskets including a Ware layup and free throw and a three˗pointer from Harrow. The lone Jaguars buckets would come off free throws by P.J. Boutte as T.J. Shipes was charged with his third foul.

Boutte then shot a pair of more free throws as Crider also was booked with a third foul. Harrow then converted on a layup to make the score 21˗17 before a three from Barksdale brought IUPUI within one at 21˗20. Another Harrow layup made it 23˗20.

DavRon Williams would be fouled on two occasions which placed him at the line twice for free throws. He made all four as IUPUI assumed a 24˗23 lead. Ware then later made a free throw to tie it up at 24.

After a layup from James, the Panthers would take a 27˗26 lead after a Hunter layup and made free throw by Jalen Brown. Georgia State would lead by this margin going into halftime.

The first points of the second half would come courtesy of a Harrow layup before Barksdale led IUPUI on a 7˗0 run to pull ahead 33˗29.

The Jaguars maintained their four point advantage at 35˗31 before a Crider dunk brought Georgia State to within two. Barksdale followed that up with a three increasing the score for IUPUI to 38˗33.

With the score at 40˗34 in favor of the Jaguars, four points from Hunter closed the gap to two at 40˗38 before Barksdale and Boutte converted on two˗pointers as the lead became 44˗38. A Shipes dunk was followed by a three by Mason Archie for a 47˗40 score.

The Panthers then embarked on a 6˗0 run to close the gap to one at 47˗46 before a D.J. McCall three and a Williams layup extended the lead back out to six at 52˗46.

After a Harrow layup that also resulted in Williams’ fourth foul, he made a free throw to make the score 52˗49. Barksdale responded with a jumper to make the score 54˗49. The next two scores would be a layup from Ryann Green and a Barksdale three to bring the tally to 57˗50 in favor of the Jaguars.

Off a Harrow layup, four straight points, including two free throws from Hunter evened the score at 57.

Hunter upped his point total to 22 with a layup to give the Panthers a 3˗0 before a Boutte field goal made it 60˗59 in favor of IUPUI. A 5˗0 run including a Hunter three and two free throws from Green made the tally 64˗60.

Boutte responded with a three to make the score 64˗63, but Hunter was fouled and made both of his free throws for a 66˗63 Georgia State lead.

IUPUI’s Leo Svete attempted a three for a tie, but it would not fall through. Shipes was there for the rebound to seal a 66˗63 win.

The Panthers will return to the Sports Arena on Thursday 7 p.m. to play Wisconsin˗Green Bay.
