Georgia State University President Dr. Mark Becker guaranteed that Georgia State sports will continue to be broadcast throughout metro Atlanta, but did not know if 88.5 FM WRAS would be one of the carriers of the Georgia State Sports Radio Network once Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) takes over, he told The Signal Friday.

Georgia State University announced in May GPB would take over the student-run radio station, WRAS 88.5 FM, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. beginning June. The initial press release from the University stated home football games would be broadcast on WRAS. It made no mention of men’s or women’s basketball, the two sports regularly broadcast on WRAS.

“Georgia State football and basketball will continue to be available as they have been,” Becker said. “It may not be at 88.5, but it will [be] broadcasted throughout the metro.”

Becker said he is not too concerned with the radio network continuing to broadcast on WRAS, and said he does not have an answer now if he and the University will make an effort to get GPB to broadcast additional games beyond home football games.

The Georgia State Sports Radio Network also broadcasts on flagship station 1340 AM The Fan 3, an affiliate of 680 The Fan and is owned by Dickey Broadcasting.

Georgia State Athletics emailed a statement to The Signal Friday that said the flagship station of the sports network will continue to be with Dickey Broadcasting.

“We will do everything we can to continue to provide as large a coverage as possible for Georgia State fans in Atlanta and around the state of Georgia,” Athletics said.

“That’s a good additional outlet for Georiga State sports,” Becker said. “We have a variety of options available to us…whether its going to be GPB or it’s going to be elsewhere.”

Every men’s and women’s basketball game was broadcast on WRAS last season, while sometimes simulatenoiusly broadcast on 1340 AM. Baseball is occasionally broadcast on the student-led station.
